New Perth Glory coach Ron Smith is confident his charges will take some valuable lessons from their disappointing loss to Sydney FC in their Hyundai A-League Pre Season Cup clash on Sunday afternoon.

Sydney overpowered the Glory at WIN Stadium with an Alex Brosque double helping the inaugural champions secure a 3-0 victory in the bonus round match.

Despite the heavy loss, Smith saw some encouraging signs from his players, and believes the team will learn from the experience.

"There were quite a few positives to come out of that game and I'll be interested to have a look at the video," he said. "The lads showed a lot of character in the way they worked for each other."

"We'll be a lot wiser should that happen again to us and that's part of the learning process you have to go through," he said.

"There were little glimpses in the second half there where we did get the ball and we switched the play a couple of times instead of going straight forward."

Smith took nothing away from the brilliant performance from Sydney, and admitted his side was outclassed on the night.

"Sydney played very well. If they played like that every week, they'll beat most teams in the league, I'll make that prediction now," he said.

"We didn't cope very well in the first half with the problems that they set us, quite clearly."

The loss didn't rest solely on Perth's defenders, Smith said, instead suggesting there was still a lot of work to be done across the board.

"The lads are not bad defenders. Last week, Adelaide probably had two chances in the game because they didn't do what Sydney did," he said.

"When you play a team that's got good mobility up front, you have to really on the ball to cope with it."

"There are things we've got to start doing far more, but it's easy to say it, you've actually got to work at it."

Smith said the Glory will now focus their attention on putting together solid game plans ahead of the Hyundai A-League season.

"We've got to get on with the job of trying to develop the understanding so that we know how to cope with the problems set by teams and then develop some ourselves after that," he said.

Perth now heads to Auckland for a showdown with the New Zealand Knights on Friday night.
