DYLAN McGowan will join up with the Qantas Australian U23s in Dubai tomorrow after being drafted in by Head Coach Aurelio Vidmar due to an injury to Sebastian Ryall.
McGowan has been added to the squad in preparation for the upcoming AFC Asian Qualifier for the 2012 London Games match against the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
After receiving the news McGowan was naturally delighted to be given the opportunity of representing his country once again.
“The call came as a bit of a surprise but of course it’s always an honour to be asked to be part of a national team squad,” McGowan said.
“We know it’s going to be tough to qualify, but we have to give it everything in the last two games and make sure we get a couple of wins which will give us a chance.”
The Qantas Australian U23s hopes of qualifying for the 2012 London Olympic Games have become slimmer overnight after FIFA announced that the UAE have been awarded a 3-0 victory for their London 2012 third round qualifying match against Iraq after FIFA found the Iraq Football Association guilty of fielding an ineligible player in the November 27 fixture.
The Olyroos will now need to win their remaining two matches against the UAE and Iraq and hope that either Uzbekistan or UAE accrue no more than one point from their final two matches for goal difference to determine final placing.
As part of their preparations for the UAE match they will play an international friendly match against the Philippines at the Al Nasr Stadium on Thursday 16 February (Kick-Off 8pm local, 3am AEDT).
