Tony Popovic’s appointment as head coach of the new Hyundai A-League club for western Sydney is proof the new club is heading in the right direction but a mountain of work awaits the former Socceroo.

Now the worst kept secret in football is finally out, we can all agree that “Poppa” is the man pretty much everyone wanted for the new club, from FFA to the club's burgeoning fan base.

From his days with Sydney United to playing in the English Premier League and then coaching with Crystal Palace, his history with football in the region and experience at the top of the game makes him the ideal choice.

His new fans will even forgive him his time with Sydney FC, as the rivalry between the two sides emerges before the new club even has a name.

But the step up from first-team coach to head coach is a big one at the best of times – never mind when there is entire squad to build from scratch.

In this respect, Popovic has a rather unique opportunity; this team, and indeed, the spirit of this club, will be his to define. From the players he signs to the backroom staff he chooses to help instigate his plan (assuming he’s given the free reign to manage the football side of things), the new club for western Sydney will be all Poppa.

It must be a massively daunting task – but also hugely exciting for one of Australian football’s finest talents. No wonder he was willing to give up his position at Palace. How many coaches get to create their own club?

But still, the clock is ticking. FFA need this club up and running almost within a month, with players needing to be preseason training in June. It’s dizzying to even think about all the work in front of Popovic.

After his unveiling today, there will be no time for him to take a breath until the start of the new A-League season sometime in early October.

Some of the ground work will have already been done, with a list of potential players ready and waiting – but that’s a long way from creating a cohesive squad and implementing a successful coaching strategy.

And, to be frank, it hardly sounds like a recipe for success. Winning teams are not created overnight, and in that respect just having his side ready to kick off against Sydney FC on the first day of the season will be an achievement in itself.

Critics of FFA decision's to start a new A-League franchise in such a short space of time will be quick to find fault in any area, from the the lack of name and colours to the boardroom appointments and media strategy.

And there is still so much to be done behind the scenes, from Popovic' backroom staff, to the club colours and name and home venue.

But despite the risks, there is still plenty of good will for the new western Sydney club, and the chance for neutrals to watch with interest how FFA handle their biggest gamble since the failed World Cup bid.

Tony Popovic returns to the A-League with an opportunity of exhilarating potential – capturing the imagination of one of the game’s great breeding grounds, and building a club that can offer a genuine pathway to some of the best young talent this country has to offer.

And that should be enough to get any football fan excited.

As with any new club entering,it is always a thing that takes a while,it is always comes down to what players come and bringing them together and start to work and build for the new season. It took for example melbourne heart a while but they have added so much to the a league and now melbourne victory vs melbourne heart is a real derby game and adds spice. And i know sydney fc will have good games against this new team to the a league.I will be wtaching with interest to see how the new club goes and will be following it as well, but when it plays wellingotn ph,will i know which team i will support.

I agree with Erik. Stop playing 2nd fiddle to rugby league by sharing their grounds. WE WANT OUR OWN STADIUM. Purpose built for our magnificent game. Somewhere we can call "OUR HOME" Congratulations on Poppa"s appointment as head coach. Now, get our name and colours to us supporters quickly, so we can organise ourselves with team apparel and flags etc. Don't follow in the English tradition with a name. WE WANT A NAME THAT FITS WITH THE WEST.

I can't see the new team doing better than bottom two. I really hope I'm wrong, but the time frame for Poppa would be short for a very experienced coach. Even with Gorman and the FFA backing him, signing and more importantly getting a side to gel logically takes longer than the few months at hand. Having said that, I will be barracking for the new side every game except when they play the Roar.

A great outcome with Tony Popovic heading up the player managerial & coaching team. Lyall Gorman has the skills and experience to provide leadership and management in the board room. The other coaching and administrative personnel will be known in good time. Securing the services of Victor Hernandez @ #10 would be an exciting player recruitment. Not so sure about Ante Covic. Recruiting a strong spine up the middle is essential to building a sound team. Lucas Neill should be approached to fill a central defence role. I would not support a marquee player in the inaugrual season. . . only Dwight Yorke & Robbie Fowler met the criteria in my view.

Really excited by Popovic's appointment. I hope be steers clear of Sydney pair Cole and Beauchamp. He should b aiming for players of better quality. Covic should definitely get a gig, at least as back up. As for Hernandez, I don't know? A fantastic player but his commitment or lack of is worrying. This league is now grown beyond being dictated by foreign imports commanding a fat salary and starting birth. Offer Carlos a salary based on his playing weight dropping to an acceptable level and let's see if he accepts?

regardless of season 1 - I hope the club takes the opportunity to build their own home at Blacktown - we need to stop sharing rugby league grounds - makes us seem like the little brother all the time - this club deserves it own home found - football in Sydney does!

Everyone hates Sydney FC except SFC fans - they set themselves up that way. So if Western Pride play their cards right they could pick up a bunch of fans - primary fans but also as "second club" fans as heart have already done. Pride's problem is their ties with the FFA, that everyone hates as well, so they will need to distance themselves and become a distinctly seperate entity. What are the odds on their colours being Buckley's old VFL club's colours?? Whatever they are??

If he's smart he will offer Carlos Hernandez and Ante Covic deals. The way Victory showed them the door was disgusting and Hernandez especially could help to draw a crowd.
