| A wonderfully gifted footballer, Harry Kewell has been thrilling Australian football fans ever since he burst on to the scene with Leeds and the Qantas Socceroos in his teens.
Kewell made 181 appearance for Leeds United, scoring 45 goals, becoming one of the most sought-after talents in the English Premier League as part of a vibrant young side, and eventually secured a dream move to Liverpool. There he won the UEFA Champions League and FA Cup during his 93 appearances for the Reds, but his years there were blighted by major ankle and groin injuries.
His standing among the Socceroo ranks soared during this time, and Kewell was arguably Australia's player of the match in the epic final 2006 World Cup qualifier in Sydney against Uruguay which sent the Socceroos to their first World Cup since 1974. There he was a key player, scoring the crucial equalising goal against Croatia that saw Australia qualify for the second round.
Kewell moved to Turkish giant Galatasaray in 2009 and continued to impress with his ability on the ball and his commitment to entertain fans.
He has remained one of the Qantas Socceroos key players and his attacking ability and experience were vital on the road to South Africa 2010, but his time at the tournament was less enjoyable after receiving a highly controversial red card against Ghana.
In 2011, Kewell delighted the Australian football fraternity by agreeing a move to the Hyundai A-League and signing with Melbourne Victory. His presence remains a huge drawcard for fans, who will hope to see the best of one of our finest footballers. |
