A host of Socceroos were looking to build on their morale boosting win over Canada mid-week as they returned to their club sides.
Tim Cahill scored the fastest ever goal in Major League Soccer history after drilling the ball into the top right corner of the Houston Dynamos goal just eight seconds into the New York Red Bulls away clash.
The ball was knocked forward to Cahill who won a contested header, before firing on the bounce to give his side the earliest of leads.
Cahill came off just after the hour mark as the Red Bulls claimed a 3-0 win making it the first time in the club’s history to have beaten Houston on their home turf in back-to-back games.
Cahill’s Socceroos and New York teammate David Carney did not take the field for the Red Bulls.
In Switzerland Dario Vidosic played a full match for FC Sion but was unable to help his side from suffering a 1-0 away defeat to FC Thun.
James Holland also played the 90 minutes for Austria Wien, as his side had a 1-1 draw at SV Ried to stay fifth in the Austrian Bundesliga.
Jackson Irvine continues to see good minutes on the pitch for Kilmarnock after being loaned out by fellow Scottish Premiership side Celtic at the start of the season. Having earned his first Socceroos cap earlier in the week, Irvine scored for his club side on 71 minutes as they won 2-0 at home to Ross County.
Motherwell FC’s Dylan McGowan played a full match as his side won 2-1 against Hearts to remain 11th in the competition.
In Asia, Josh Kennedy came on in the 54th minute as Nagoya Grampus lost 2-1 away to Vegalta Sendai. Meanwhile Lucas Neill was an unused substitute for fellow J-League side Omiya Ardija, who continued their slide down the ladder after losing at home 1-0 to Oita Trinita.
Alex Wilkinson played in the Korea Republic FA Cup final, with his side Jeonbuk FC losing 4-3 on penalties to Pohang Steelers after the sides couldn’t be split after extra time.
Brett Holman was a second half substitute for UAE club Al Nasr and set up a goal to help his side to a 3-0 away win over Emirateds Club.
After starring for the Socceroos mid-week, Mark Bresciano returned to his Qatari club Al Gharafa as they claimed a 3-1 win at Rayyan SC to move up to 7th in the Qatar Stars League.
Chinese Super League action saw Daniel Mullen play in Dalian Aerbin’s 1-0 home win over Shanghai Shenhua, while Ryan McGowan played in second placed Shandong Luneng’s 1-1 away draw with Jiangsu Sainty. Jonas Salley (Guizhou Renhe), Micahel Marrone (Shanghai Shenxin), Rostyn Griffiths (Guangzhou R&F) and Eddy Bosnar (Guangzhou R&F) also all saw action in the top Chinese division.
