Beckham agent denies Australia link

UPDATE: David Beckham's management have denied the LA Galaxy star is on the verge of moving to Australia.

Football Federation Australia issues a statement earlier today saying a representative of Beckham's had been in touch, but in the UK this morning, his agent said the reports were a little premature.

"There is always enormous interest from clubs across the world in signing David as a player.

"There are absolutely no plans to play in Australia, David is completely focused on the MLS play offs and winning another Championship with the Galaxy."

It had been suggested Beckham could be signed on a 10-game guest stint when his current contract with MLS side LA Galaxy runs out in December.

FFA released a statement on Friday afternoon saying it had received an approach "by an agent representing the management" of Beckham.

“The approach from David Beckham’s people is another sign of how much the Hyundai A-League has grown in stature on a global basis,” the statement said.

“Beckham is superstar on the world stage and he would be another massive signing for the Hyundai A-League after the arrivals of Alessandro Del Piero, Emile Heskey and Shinji Ono. But this approach remains at a very preliminary stage.”

A-League clubs responded to the speculation this afternoon, with Newcastle Jets and Melbourne Victory ruling themselves out, while Perth Glory and Melbourne Heart both admitting they would be interested in signing the LA Galaxy midfielder.

What do you think of having David Beckham in the Hyundai A-League? Have you say below.

How far will Western Sydney go in the AFC Champions League?

I have seen Beckham play at Redbull Arena. He is very classy to watch, but to be realistic with you I just can not see it happen. He seems to love his life style here in the United States. Go L.A. Galaxy in the play offs against the Seattle Sounders.

I have been a football follower for many years and find it ludicrous that media can fan such unrealistic speculation. Beckham's spokesman has denied any talks in him coming to Australia. I heard a story linking Liverpool's Luis Suarez with a move to Manchester City two days ago. That was following Suarez's own statement saying he loved Liverpool and had just signed a new LONG TERM contract. So rumours are just that, don't listen to them.

Yeah right. He's not going anywhere. He'll retire here in the States. It's not just for him, but for his Spice Girl wife.

Becks should join the Central Coast Mariners, he could live the life down here at Terrigal. Much better then playing for WSW and living in Parramatta. Also he would not go to Brisbane or Melbourne as too small compared to Sydney. Cannot wait to see him plying his trade at mighty BlueTongue Stadium in Gods Country!

Bring it on, great if Heart got him. That said unlikely anyone will get him given the lack of consistency as usual in the media reporting.

If AUFC can get $500k for Van Dijk in the January window, I am sure Rob Gerrard can find the rest of the money (with sponsors and kit manufacturer Kappa stumping up some cash as well) to sign Beckham to a 2 year deal paying him as much as or more than Del Piero.

As long as we can see him play at Hunter Stadium Newcastle, I don't care which club he goes to... Will be great for the League :-)

Beck's appearance would be great for publicity and certainly draw better crowds. If you truly want to increase the supporter base he's the sort of draw card that will increase numbers. Even at 37 he is good to watch and will pass on valuable knowledge to our younger players. Please don't put him in Sydney FC. I'm already deeply embarrassed for the great ADP situation. Fox and FFA should offer him a working holiday and put him with CCM or Newcastle.

I love how ever media outlet is reporting this like mad - but the whole thing is nothing more than speculation and not one report has anything concrete to offer. Sounds like a media beat up or FFA PR push to me...
