Who could forget Brisbane Roar’s great escape? It was 0-0 after 90 minutes, but this match came to life in extra time. Adam Kwasnik and Oliver Bozanic put Central Coast 2-0 to the good, before Henrique pulled one back. Erik Paartalu equalised with the final act of the match, heading in a corner and sending the match to a shootout. The rest, is history.
Where do we start? There have been some truly world class goals throughout the A-League and this stunner from Marcos Flores is right up there. Picking the ball up from a Sergio van Dijk lay-off, Flores beat a handful of Newcastle Jets defenders with some great dribbling and balance, before potting a left footed shot into the top corner.
He was a genuine superstar back in Season 1 of the A-League. Dwight Yorke, formerly of Aston Villa and Manchester United had the swagger on the pitch to go with his undoubted style off it. Typically, he rose to the occasion and scored in Sydney FC’s first match, against Melbourne Victory. Played a decisive hand in the Grand Final that season as the Sky Blues beat Central Coast Mariners 1-0.
Best goal celebration
Henrique’s slippery fish, Kwame Yeboah’s backflip, Archie Thompson’s corner flag routines, Alessandro Del Piero’s tongue out. Which celebration is your all-time A-League favourite?
