GLORY & PHOENIX SHARE SPOILS

Perth Glory has continued their unbeaten four-game streak with a gutsy 1-1 away draw against the Wellington Phoenix at AMI Stadium in Christchurch on Saturday.

The early signs were not good for the Glory when they fell behind to an Andrew DURANTE goal in the 4th minute after a Steve PANTELIDIS foul on Stein HUYSEGEMS led to a Carlos HERNANDEZ free kick which the Wellington Phoenix Captain duly turned in.

But Glory gradually started to settle down and work their way back into the match and nearly found an equalizer in the 18th minute when Ryo NAGAI narrowly missed an overhead kick following a cross from Scott Jamieson and a header turned back across the box from Steven McGARRY.

It was Michael THWAITE’s turn next to threaten the Phoenix goal, almost turning in a McGARRY corner in the 21st minute, but his header from inside the six yard box sailed just over the crossbar.

However the build up in pressure eventually paid dividends with NAGAI finally finding a way past the Phoenix defense in the 29th minute, hitting the ball into the bottom corner of the net following some great work from Sidnei SCIOLA MORAES when he broke down the left wing.

Chances dried up after that for both teams and they went into the halftime break tied at 1-1

It continued to be a tight affair in the early parts of the second half with neither team able to gain any dominance.

Ben SIGMUND came closest to giving the home side the lead in the 71st minute but misguided his diving header from inside the six yard box following another dangerous HERNANDEZ free kick.

Glory’s best chance in the second half fell to Jamie MACLAREN in the 80th minute, with the Young Socceroo breaking the offside trap, running onto Ryan EDWARDS’s through ball and rounding Phoenix keeper Glen MOSS but the No.10 was unable to keep his shot on target from an acute angle.

Glory continued to push and create the better chances with Matthew DAVIES, Brandon O’NEILL and MORAES all trying their luck in the 77th, 88th and 90th minutes but were unable to find a way past MOSS in the Phoenix goal as the match drew to an end and both teams had to settle for a point each.
