Sydney FC has completed the signing of experienced Aussie defender Trent McClenahan on a 1 year contract.
The former Young Socceroos captain returned from a nine year stint in the English and Scottish leagues last year, joining the Perth Glory squad that went on to reach the Hyundai A-League Grand Final, before moving to the Central Coast Mariners as part of their Asian Champions League campaign.
Capped 18 times by the Young Socceroos, the Chipping Norton born defender joins Sydney FC with a good pedigree having spent five years at West Ham United alongside England internationals Michael Carrick, Jermaine Defoe, Glenn Johnson and Joe Cole.
“I’m really happy to get the deal over the line and I’m looking forward to getting into it,” said Trent.
“Sydney is one of the biggest clubs in the league and hopefully I can get settled now and put in some good performances.”
Fans will be keen to see what the 27 year old can bring to the Sky Blues squad and the full back was happy to reveal what he hopes they’ll see.
“I think I’m a pretty good one on one defender, I like to pass the ball and keep it on the ground, and I like to get forward and try and help the other boys score some goals,” he said.
Sydney FC Head Coach Ian Crook was delighted to win Trent’s signature after interest from other A-League clubs and from England.
“For me he is a winner and has a winning mentality. He wants to succeed and is a really good age for us, having had some good experience overseas and in captaining the Australian under 20’s. He fits into a couple of areas for us either at full back or a central defender which is really good as well,” said Crook.
McClenahan comes into contention for a place in the squad to face the Macarthur Rams at Campbelltown Stadium on Tuesday night (14th August kick off 7.30pm).
