In the end Patersons Stadium didn’t crumble under the weight of expectation.

Perth Glory gained their revenge, Besart Berisha left unscathed and everything was wrapped up in a neat little package.

So does that mean the end of the whole Glory-Roar penalty imbroglio? Not on your life.

For one thing Perth barely gained any revenge at all. They may have celebrated Billy Mehmet’s late winner in their 1-0 win over Brisbane but winning a grand final rematch in the opening round is hardly the same as winning a decider.

And while Berisha’s contribution amounted to little more than a wildly celebrated yellow card on the stroke of half-time, Brisbane’s lively display suggests they’re still a force to be reckoned with.

The gloves were off in Perth – though you suspect Travis Dodd probably packed his with his kit – but the Glory were leading on points when Mehmet delivered his knock-out blow.

They should have opened the scoring barely a quarter of an hour in but Kiwi international Shane Smeltz pushed the ball too far forward in his attempt to round on-rushing Roar custodian Michael Theo.

And with the crafty Liam Miller pulling the strings in midfield, Perth carved out chances in a much easier fashion than the Roar’s new coach Rado Vidosic would have liked.

Vidosic has of course taken over from the departed Ange Postecoglou and the Roar packed a punch of their own as some of the new man’s subtle changes gradually came to the fore.

Erik Paartalu flashed a header wide, Nick Fitzgerald stung the palms of Danny Vukovic and Ben Halloran struck the woodwork late on as Brisbane employed a more direct approach than in years gone by.

And though the Roar will leave the west disappointed they know one bitter pill to swallow hardly makes a season.

But they will have also learned that Perth should once again prove genuine title challengers.

So much is made of Thomas Broich’s playmaking abilities but in the vastly underrated Miller, Perth possess a creative schemer of their own.

Like all good playmakers Miller seems to have more time on the ball than most and if Smeltz can start converting a few more of the chances he creates, Glory should be potent in front of goal.

Match-winner Mehmet also proved his worth, angling a bullet header home where others might have fluffed their chance.

For all the talk of Alessandro Del Piero and Shinji Ono lighting up the A-League with their undoubted creative skill, in Mehmet it was a no-nonsense import from a more humble background who proved decisive in the opening round.

Speaking of Del Piero, his performance on a slippery pitch in Wellington suggests the Italian great could prove highly influential this season – provided his teammates get up to speed with his train of thought.

Time seemed to stand still when the former Juventus legend was on the ball but sadly for Sydney FC fans that wasn’t the case for his team-mates, as Wellington pulled off an expertly executed home win against their more fancied opponents.

Interestingly none of Del Piero, Wanderers’ import Shinji Ono or Newcastle Jets’ marquee man Emile Heskey picked up three points over the weekend, reminding us that football is a team game after all.

And it’s a game being enjoyed by more fans than ever after the aggregate attendance record was broken on the back of five absorbing opening-round fixtures.

Melbourne threw down the gauntlet when more than 42,000 fans piled into Etihad Stadium for the derby, so now it’s Sydney’s time to respond when the Sky Blues host Newcastle in Del Piero’s home debut.

And Brisbane fans will be hoping their team can bounce back after a disappointing start, as Perth landed the first blow in what is shaping up to be a season-long slugfest between the two foes.

You beat me to it Chris. Glory fans are still bitter, twisted and whinging and we are into the next season. I doubt many Roar fans were that keyed up about round 1. But round 2 is a different story. Perth won't make the finals this season, but MV will. Bring on Saturday night in the best stadium in the country. Go the Roar.

@Delboy I don't think the Roar supporter comments are anything like the Glory whinging. On the weekend we lost. There was a few calls I disagreed with, but that's football. We're not to go around complaining for the next 6 months how we were "Robbed" (and to make it absolutely clear everyone who knows the game and doesn't have an obvious bias have made it clear it was a penalty) That doesn't mean we shouldn't complain about Burns' tactics. He plays dirty - He elbowed one of our players in the face. This is hardly the first time we (or other teams) have mentioned this. It's been mentioned by many fans, after their teams have beaten and been beaten by Perth. And his card count backs this up.

what a strange grouping of comments? AdP a prima donna? one of the best players around. there is nothing precious about him. Burns is dirty - elbows to the head , grabbing ears of players? that's not a accident, its intentional. and that incident as mentioned last year pretending he was hit by tyson when henrique slapped him (called play acting and diving). and still mention of the grand final and the roar cheating when there was no dive -how does berisha dive when miller was behind him? i'm so sick of hearing it. it is fodder for football haters but its football fans (some) that persist with the tag to give themselves a reason why perth lost apart from fairly losing the game the grand final result was the right one. perth won the game on sunday no worries, but berisha copping a yellow - still don't know why with heffernan, smeltz and burns (of course) all at him. nichols gets a yellow for firing up when berisha was tripped by burns and kneed by miller, broich copped a beauty from dodd - jesus. take the blinkers off. anyway, nice article mike, enjoy the work on the roar sports opinion also. can't wait for the victory this saturday and perth back here december 21. there won't be any ear pulling or tripping then i can promise you.

reading the comments on the perth brisbane game on sunday i assume most come from disapointed brisbane fans.try to remember how glory supporters felt at the end of last season and accept your defeat gracefully. there is still a full season ahead to prove you were worthy winners last season and remember, its called the WORLD GAME not the brisbane game.regards to all genuine football fans who ever you support.

I think that Perth need to get over the whole grand final thing. The professionals are saying it wasn't a dive so get over it. Foxsports also needs to get over it, stop saying that Perth needed to get revenge for Berisha's dive. Jacob Burns is easily the dirtiest player in the A-League now ever since Muscat left. And he seems to get away with everything. But out of teams, Perth is the dirtiest.

Glory do play dirty and Jacob Burns is a disgrace. As for rolling on the ground crying, Glory did plently of that. Jacob burns smacks a Roar player over the head and the roar player shrugs his shoulders. BArhsa does the same to a Glory player and he goes down. Smae las year with the henrique incident. He did the same as burns did yesterday, but got a red. Only becuase burns faked (yes he acted) about the incident. And I love the comentators support of Burns. along the lines of 'burns elbowed him to the head but thats just playing hard' after a tackly on halloran. As for Brisbane cheating - they didnt cheat in the final and there is no way that the south korean guy took a dive yesterday. It was a fair takle (no penality) but he was still bundled over. so play on. All in all a decent enough game by the two teams that I think will be first and second. Either team could have won it and a draw would have been fair. Maybe Perth just pipped it and they did score a good goal. So a draw or perth win is just about right, And that is from a roar supporter (you know, those guys that can lose a good game grasously without blaming the world). - comes from being a big club i guess....

Actually, Brisbane are known most for their ability to play a possession based game and their ability to secure come from behind wins that no other team could. MikeJames i'm guessing you must be a Perth Glory supporter still stinging over the loss to the Brisbane Roar in the Grand Final last year. If you could actually take the time of day to watch the countless review videos that show the tackle, contact and effect of the play, you would see it was indeed a penalty and not a dive as you are so claiming Brisbane Roar are known for. I think it's time to let live and move on from the past, complaining about the past cannot change it, so why not sit back and enjoy the exciting prospect of a much more even season 8 of the A-League. I wish all the teams the best of luck for the season.

"Del Piero style prima donna imports"; sneers Patrick Doherty...well correct me if i';m wrong Patrick but hasn't all media pundits, including most on this very page, been in unison in claiming that Del Piero was in fact Sydney F.C's best player and a class apart his below average teammates on the weekend? Cut the guy some slack as once he gets more game time, and his teammates start singing from the same hymn sheet, he will be formidable and this comment is coming from a Victory fan!!

i wouldnt say glory play dirty, they just play hard and don't roll around on the ground crying which i think is a good quality. perth may be known for playing dirty but brisbane are known for diving and cheating which is much less repectable.

A fair account Mike. Overall, an entertaining game with both sides showing we do not need Del Piero style prima donna imports in this league. The money should be spent on youth development. Twenty years ago, it was all despair. Today, good football, great sometimes, from both teams. Get a life MUC! Go Glory!

Jacob Burns must be the dirtiest player in the A-League by the proverbial mile. How he doesn't pick up a yellow card in every match is beyond me!

How can Perth complain about Berisha, when they're the dirtiest team in the A-League?
