The NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers FC have today confirmed the signing of Joey Gibbs from the Marconi club that compete in the NSW Premier League.
Gibbs has joined the Wanderers on a one year deal that will see him be part of the Hyundai A-League squad in their inaugural year in the competition.
The 20-year-old had his first training session with the club today and will be looking to recapture that form that saw him score four goals in the Wanderers first pre-season match against Nepean FC back in July.
Gibbs becomes the Wanderers 21st signing and after making one appearance in the Hyundai A-League in season 2009-10, he will be pushing for a starting spot in the coming weeks.
“I’m definitely excited about being part of a new club and am looking forward to developing my football over the next 12 months,” Gibbs said. “It was a little difficult at the beginning but that is what being on trial is about, I knew if I went away and kept working hard that my chance would come and I’m very thankful that Tony and the rest of the staff are giving me that opportunity.
The Central Coast Coasties and Manly United junior comes to the Wanderers off the back of a premiership winning season at Marconi.
“You set goals for yourself at the beginning of the year and one of mine was to play well for Marconi and give myself every chance of securing a contract with an A-League club again,” Gibbs added. “I want to repay the Wanderers for providing me with this chance and I will be doing everything in my power to be at my best for the Wanderers.”
Coach Tony Popovic was impressed with Gibbs’ initial trial and is delighted to now have him as part of the squad.
“We had Joey here with us early on and we stuck with our policy of not jumping in and rushing to sign him,” Popovic said. “He went back and had an outstanding year with Marconi helping them win the State League title.
“He is someone with A-League experience and someone who has spent time at other clubs so he knows what it takes at this level.
“We are not bringing him in just to make up the numbers and we see him as someone that will make a big contribution to the Wanderers this season.”
