How did it come to this? Melbourne Victory went into the season with an excellent squad and are now floundering near the bottom of the ladder.

It could have been prevented if a different approach was taken from the start, an approach that a team of stars needed - the coach ruling with an iron fist and a clever game plan. An approach that the best teams, with the best individuals need - discipline and strategy.

The danger of having top individuals at a club is it can be too easy to forget the importance of having a well thought-out tactical plan - every team needs one, irrespective of the players they have.

But also because other teams will always rise to the occasion and have massive hunger to beat the so-called "superstars", the team that is hunted by the others as a prized scalp.

Not only are good tactics vital, but the coach will set the tone for his team. A coach with real presence will get that extra few per cent out of players and take them to the next level.

Players are always testing limits - as I did many times - whether it be testing the coaching staff or management. It just comes down to how much a coach or management let you get away with.

Melbourne Victory management did a wonderful job to lure a star like Harry Kewell to our shores, but that was really just the start.

The deal was agreed early August but Kewell turned up in September, not enough time to get serious runs on the board regarding team understanding and fitness.

Because of the long off season in Australia, all clubs have the opportunity to work on team dynamics and fitness - something not to be underestimated.

Melbourne Victory management and coaching staff received plaudits for luring Harry back and rightly so, but they should have put their foot down by getting him in the country as soon as possible to give him ample time to gel with his teammates and reach peak fitness after a lengthy break.

Although Harry is slowly getting fitter and clearly has needed time to get accustomed with his teammates, he was always going to be behind the eight ball going in to the season.

I hope Mehmet Durakovic learns from this experience and down the track comes back bigger and better as a coach, wherever it may be. He needs to get away and reflect. Not only about how to do things better on the field but also about some of the things he has said in front of the camera as well, the latest example being post-game against Brisbane Roar, saying that his own side's opponent was due for a win after five losses.

Not only is this sedning the wrong message, regardless of which club you are at, but at a club like Melbourne Victory where expectations are high, saying the opponent was due for a win is completely unacceptable.

The man at the helm of a club the size of Melbourne Victory should exclusively be explaining why Melbourne Victory didn't win - not that the opponent was due.

Durakovic's much-heralded rant saying, "I am the boss" was praised by many - I was not one of those. I thought, "If you really are the boss, why do you need to organise a get-together with the media to say that? Wasn’t it clear from the start when named head coach that you are supposed to be the boss?"

Saying he was the boss months later was admitting you never really were nor will you now ever really be as long as you are at Melbourne Victory. It’s about ruling with an iron fist from day one - trying to later won’t be bought - not by me anyway.

I sincerely hope Melbourne Victory get their act together. Such a great club with highly passionate fans and the closest I have seen to a European-style atmosphere here in the A-League - deserve all the success they get.

With such a fan base it puts even more focus on the decisions made on and off the park because the potential for scrutiny is so much higher.

As for the new boss Jim Magilton? Let’s see what he comes up with on the park and what he says - starting day one.

Spot on Ned! When are you going to get a full time gig on Matchday Saturday? I think Memhet was clueless on the field and in his media conferences.

@Thomas You are a imbecile if you think Ned knows nothing. Mate, the guy played in the bundesliga and is a gifted socceroo. To bad he had a spat with farina and it all ended to prematurely. for my liking. Also victory has a good squad you numnut, they just need to be put in their place(too many speak to media saying what they like) and they also need to gel and need a leader. Magilton seems like he has all the qualities. Lets see how the next few weeks go, i reckon they will finsih 3rd or 4th and will have an impact in the finals.

Mr. Zelic, Ned - why don’t you put yourself as a candidate for SFC new coaching position?

I'm not sure about all this analysis TBH. The A-League season is so short, just 27 matches for each team and only 10 clubs in all. Maximum/minimum on squad size, a salary cap, limits on marquees - everything tends to level the 10 clubs out so that on any given day any one of them can beat any other one. A couple of injuries at the wrong time, the odd wrong call from the match officials...and the rooster becomes roast chicken very quickly. No proper reserves competition, no other domestic competition to give a club an alternative road to success...long travelling times, variable weather conditions...the A-League is a pretty treacherous place for managers in the short term. Already Culina, Coolen and Durakovic have gone and the season is barely half over - methinks boards, commentators and fans are asking too much in too short a time and are too ready to chop heads.

I speak only as a football fan in general, since I don't have Foxtel and can't watch my own country's league. I feel all of you have touched on some vital issues, and cannot figure out why the people entrusted with growing the local sport seem to be oblivious to these things. Marquee players are good for getting shirts, but you need to have the hard workers to get results for the club or you run the risk of ruining your marquee's reputation, and that of the club itself. We lack young talent and good managers. There are some horrible coaches managing English Premier League sides and SPL clubs; why do we think coaches that are not good enough for England and Scotland are the best option to manage our clubs? Isn't Postecoglou proof that we have some real talent right here? And on developing youth, we need to educate the future coaches (I am with you Fossy!), in the meantime we can seek some help from Germany, Holland, Spain or pretty much the whole South American continent.

There's an undercurrent in this article which mentions no names but which is clear enough and probably real. For me if any hypothetical certain person is going to undermine the I am the boss once then he (or she) will not hesitate do it again. For me, the certain person is either told to put up by being given the I am the boss job or shut up by being shunted out of the club altogether.

Bring Harry Kewell to Adelaide United, let him be a REDS again.

I agree with you Peter that Heart are doing some great things with young players (and I am a heart supporter) but some of the comments you make are bizarre. Covic has been perhaps the best keeper in the league this season, and other teams also have old keepers - Heart included. Kewell has played some quality games - he was a stand-out last night against Newcastle with some brilliant long passes that split open the defence. Of course his on field quality doesn't match his off-field quality these days - but still a very decent player who can make things happen, and he earnt his off-field attention from what he did on the field. Vargas has proved himself a reliable defender over the years. The only spot I would agree with you on is the wing backs - have a look at the influence and stability of Marrone and Behich at Heart - Victory simply aren't getting that. And finally - attack the ball, not the man - If you don't agree with what Ned has to say so be it - but he had a decent career, and good on him for developing a career in the media. Attacking Ned because you think he played nowhere just makes you seem like a fool.

@ Dave, Harry is far from past it and gone. He isn't as quick as he used to be but if you watch the match against Newcastle from yesterday you will see everything you need - he has a lot to offer this league and it is visible to those that watch Melbourne that with a real coach and some time to adapt to the Australian game he will flourish as he is a class above the rest of the league. Merrick also had to go as Victory had become stale and were not moving forward. As for Jim Magilton, we won't know what he can do in the A-league until he gets time to show us. He has coached at a higher level than the A-league and was a very experienced player. He has a decent record and the fans from the clubs he has previously coached have nothing but positive things to say about him.

I agree with everything you have said. Even before Kewell was signed, Durakovic had neither the managerial experience nor the imposing character to handle a job like Victory. It beggars belief that he was selected for the position after 'an extensive' search. After Harry Kewell, he was floundering. I feel for Mehm. After one press conference, you can tell that Jim Magilton has the skills, the enthusiam and the confidence to do this job. Whether it all comes together for him remains to be seen - but he has a much better chance of success that Mehm.

Ned, Lets get something straight here, you have no clue about football . You have played no where. As for Melbourne Victory well they can bring Wenger or Fegie and they will still be crap. The Problem is the squad you have Kewell waste of breath Hernadaz can play but needs to lose at least 10kg to run out a full match Allsop is a dud lucky if got a game in the premier league with green gully, Vargas hack both right and left backs are a joke and 37yo goal keeper. There is no young talent at all. This club needs to look at the Melbourne heart there players are an average age of 25. Football these days is about athletes running out a game not has beens. Im not saying Mehmet was great but people look at your cattle first then speak, and as for Musket please dont insult us fans the guy is a hack my advice he should coach geroge cross. like or lump it. Peace

A good Manager is everything, as a supporter of the smallest club in the league The Mariners, we have always punched well above our weight, thanks in most to our 2 larger than life Managers, firstly Lawrie McKinna, who did a fantastic job with the resources he had, and also now with Graham Arnold at the helm. Marquee players are only shirt sellers, and victory would have been better off not signing harry the pudding, Muscats not the man for the job, unless you want a riot. Dump mKewell and have a Marquee Manager in stead you have a half decent squad.

Victory are the best club in Australia, and I say that as a Roar fan. The biggest problem I see is signing a soft serve like Harry , who has been off the boil since he potted that goal in the 2006 world cup. He is a shirt seller, nothing more. I saw him in his premierleague days at my old haunt Villa Park, but those days are long gone. Merricks should never have left, he still had lots to give and I'm sorry to say that Magilton is not the relplacement. I hope for the sake of the A League that Victory find a worthy manager who can find a young ozzie striker to put Harry out of his misery and manage. My bet is Muscat as he has been there seen it, done it and with a quality coaching staff behind him will lift Victory out of this mess. Pome Dave

I think your spot on here Ned, as a Victory fan it was clear to all that Durackovic wasn't in control, he didn't have the right tactics and the players looked clueless. Victory need someone who wants to win, a coach with a winning attitude to meet the fans high expectations. Mehmet didn't have the attitude to take Melbourne back to the top.
