Joe Montemurro claims first trophy with Juventus

Australian coach Joe Montemurro claimed his first piece of silverware at Juventus Women on Sunday morning (AEDT) as his side claimed the Supercoppa Italiana Femminile in dramatic fashion.

Trailing AC Milan at half time, Juventus responded early in the second half with an equaliser thanks to an own goal from the opposition.

Things went from bad to worse for Milan just minutes later when Laia Codina was sent off, but the side did well to soak up the increasing pressure from Juventus as the half went on.

However, the parity was finally broken with just two minutes remaining, as Cristiana Girelli found a late winner to secure Juventus' third consecutive Supercoppa title.

It marked Montemurro's first trophy as Juventus head coach, having joined the Italian giants from Arsenal just seven months ago.

Montemurro's side are also on track to claim the Serie A femminile in 2021/22, leading the pack by eight points at the midway point of the season. If Juve claim the title this season, it will be their fifth consecutive league championship.

Juventus are also into the Quarter Finals of the UEFA Women's Champions League, with Montemurro coming up against fellow Aussie Ellie Carpenter & Lyon in the last eight. The first leg is currently scheduled for Thursday, 24 March (AEDT).
