Sam Kerr hat-trick guides Chelsea to Conti Cup trophy

Westfield Matilda Sam Kerr has played a starring role in Chelsea's 6-0 romp of Bristol in the Continental Cup final.

Kerr and Fran Kirby were at their dynamic best to earn Chelsea their second straight league cup and a fourth trophy since the Australian captain arrived in November 2019.

It was a dream start for Kerr who opened the scoring in the second minute. Guro Reiten's through ball found Kirby who squared it across the face of goal for Kerr to finish from close range.

By the 10th minute, Kerr would add a second, Kirby once again the provider. A cool, low finish past Sophie Baggaley warranted a trademark back flip celebration from the Westfield Matilda.

Kirby would add her name to the scoresheet in the 28th and 38th minute to ensure the Blues entered half time with a 4-0 lead.

Kerr started the second half much like the first by scoring yet again to seal her hat trick. Kirby - who was on a hat trick herself - unselfishly passed the ball to Kerr in a move similar to the opening goal of the match.

Reiten rounded out the win just before the hour mark to make it 6-0. A late injury to Maren Mjelde added a bittersweet element to the victory.

This Conti Cup is Chelsea's second in as many years, and is added to their Community Shield to start the season as well as last year's league title.

They and Bristol are both back in action midweek with the resumption of FA WSL matches.
