Vale Bill Murphy

Football Australia is deeply saddened to have learned of the passing of Socceroo #131, Bill Murphy.

Murphy made his debut against New Zealand in 1954, playing a total of five times for Australia. He scored a goal on his international debut, also finding the net against Rapid Vienna and Hong Kong in ‘B’ internationals.

Born in Barrhead, Glasgow in 1928, William Murphy played professional football with Exeter City, Stirling Albion and Bristol Rovers. He nearly signed for Arsenal on two occassions but after breaking his leg twice the move never came to fruition.

Bill was brought to Australia in the 50s to play for Gladesville-Ryde, before moving to Hakoah, who he would go on to captain. Bill represented Australia between 1953 and 1956, scoring four goals in five appearances.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the immediate and extended Murphy family, and those closest to Bill.
