Novello called up for Olyroos camp

Subway Olyroos’ Head Coach Tony Vidmar has called up 18-year-old Western Australian Jahce Novello for this month’s U-23 men’s national team training camp in Italy.

Novello, who plays for Serie B side, Cosenza Calcio, replaces Central Coast Mariners’ Jacob Farrell who has withdrawn due to illness.

Upon confirming this change, Subway Olyroos’ Head Coach Tony Vidmar said: “It’s unfortunate for us that Jacob is unable to attend this month’s camp in Italy after a strong season for the Central Coast Mariners.

“Jacob is talented player and will remain in my plans for future opportunities as we prepare for this year’s AFC Asian Cup 2024 qualifiers and Paris 2024 Olympic qualifiers early next year.

“Coming into the squad for this camp is Jahce Novello, a gifted player who is currently playing in Italy and someone that’s been on our radar, so this is a good opportunity for us to take a closer look at him,” concluded Vidmar.

The squad of 24-players will start to assemble on Monday at the Australian Institute of Sport European Training Centre located in Gavirate, Varese for a 9-day training camp to take place during the upcoming FIFA men’s International window from 20 – 28 March.

This camp will also involve two friendly matches against the Switzerland U-20 national team in Bellinzona, Switzerland on Friday, 24 March and Serie B outfit, Como 1907 on Monday, 27 March.

The Subway Olyroos have an important seven months ahead, with the AFC U-23 Asian Cup 2024 Qualifiers scheduled for 4 – 12 September 2023, and if the team progresses, the AFC U-23 Asian Cup 2024 in early 2024 (dates to be confirmed by AFC) which double as Paris 2024 Olympics qualifiers.
