Football Australia is deeply saddened to have learned of the passing of former Socceroo Alan Marnoch.
Marnoch became the 186th player to represent Australia’s senior men’s national team in an A' international when he made his debut for the Socceroos against Scotland, the nation of his birth, in May 1967.
In total, Marnoch made 14 appearances for the Socceroos from 1967 to 1969. His esteemed performances resulted in him being named in Football Australia’s Men’s Team of the Decade for the period 1963 to 1970.
Marnoch played for Midlothian Juniors in Scotland in his childhood, before migrating to Sydney, Australia, where he joined Hakoah.
With Hakoah, Marnoch gained a reputation as being the soundest stopper in New South Wales following World War II.
Marnoch won multiple Premierships with the club, with whom he played with through to the mid 1970s. In total, he made over 300 appearances for Hakoah.
Marnoch featured for Australia throughout its qualification campaign for the FIFA World Cup Mexico 1970.
With the green and gold, Marnoch travelled Laurenco Marques (now Maputo) in Mozambique, where he featured in all three matches against Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) alongside teammates including Ron Corry, Manfred Schaefer, Johnny Warren, Ray Baartz, and Adrian Alston.
Marnoch’s final appearance for Australia came in World Cup qualifying in Sydney against Israel – a 1-1 draw with Israel at the Sydney Sports Ground.
Football Australia extends its deepest sympathies to the immediate and extended Marnoch family, and those closest to Alan.
