Match Official Appointments - Sydney Super Cup

The Sydney Super Cup not only marks the return to our shores of one of Australia’s most decorated coaches in Ange Postecoglou (Celtic), but the match on Sunday between Everton and Celtic also sees the return of Jarred Gillett to Australian refereeing, for the first time since he departed for England in 2019.

After making his refereeing debut in the A-League in 2010 at the age of 23, over nine seasons Gillett refereed 159 matches, including five (5) A-League Grand Finals and was also named Referee of the Year five (5) times.

Gillett was one of Football Australia’s foundation full-time referees, and excelled not only domestically but also internationally, with plenty of high profile appointments in the AFC Champions League, AFC Cup, as well as exchanges in the J-League (Japan), Chinese Super League, and the Saudi Pro-League.

Gillett finished his refereeing duties in Australia in March 2019 and emigrated to the UK to pursue both academic and refereeing opportunities. Graduating with a PhD in Biomechanics from The University of Queensland in December 2018, focusing on children with Cerebral Palsy, he accepted a position at Liverpool John Moores University to continue his research, as well as joining up with the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) as a Select Group 2 referee.

After only two full seasons on the Select Group 2 list officiating predominantly Championship matches, Gillett was promoted to the Select Group 1 list for the 2021/22 season, and became the first person outside of the UK and Ireland to referee a Premier League fixture on 26 September 2021 with the match between Watford and Newcastle United.

To date he has refereed 18 Premier League matches, and was also entrusted with the League Two Playoff Final last season between Mansfield Town and Port Vale.

Gillett will referee Sunday’s Sydney Super Cup match between Everton and Celtic at Accor Stadium, and will be assisted by his Premier League compatriots Darren Cann, who was an assistant referee for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final, and Richard West, who between them have been an assistant referee for close to 1000 Premier League matches.

2021/22 A-League Referee of the Year Alex King will referee the opening match between Celtic and Sydney FC on Thursday night at Allianz Stadium, while Adam Kersey will referee the final match between Everton and Western Sydney Wanderers next Wednesday at CommBank Stadium.
